Photos edited...

I have started to edited photos from  the photoshoot for my magazine. I found tutorials online for photoshop and have created a few different looks.
This is the photo that i have chosen for my front cover, the second photo is the edited version, i actually really like this edit but i am going to continue editing the same picture more to make sure that the right edit is chosen.

This is one of the pictures that i am considering for my feature article, i like this editing but to me it looks too much and a little on the cartoon side, however i love the fact that the contrast has altered making the photo stand out a lot more than the original photo.

Photoshoot!!!

Here it is!!! My photoshoot! Yet again it had to snow on the day i planned to do the shoot so the costumes i had planned didn't go according to plan. I did however get my model to wear black which was one of my costume ideas and we used the vinyl as a prop. I also used the locations that i said i was going to use although at the memorial park i did use a different spot as Lois didn't want people to watch. I took a variety of shots ranging from close ups for the front cover to medium shots and long shots for the feature article, it has also given me a large selection of images to work with for page ideas. All these pictures are unedited however i will edit them for the final piece.

Contents and Feature Article Mockups!

These are my mockups of the contents page and feature aticle, the feature article looks quite plain and simple but i am hoping that the images will catch the readers attention and i wll be having some "bitchy" quotes taken from my interview which will also stand out making the article look more interesting. For the feature article i will have about 2-3 images which will hopefully balance out the interview as at the moment it is quite lengthy however i am thinking of cutting it down so the readers won't get too bored. On the contents page i have placed all the listings of contents and smaller images down the right hand side as people see this side when flicking through a magazine. The smaller images are right on the edge as images tend to catch the eye more than text therefore the reader will hopefully see the images and be interested in them.

Front cover mockup 2!!!

This is the second front cover mockup that i decided to do as an extra, this cover shows an up and coming duo. I have decided that i am going to use the solo artist idea as it is more convenient with mine and my friends scheduals and overall i like the first mockup cover that i did for the solo artist.

Timetable...

I have created a timetable to help me manage my time for the final weeks of my coursework. Overall i have 5 weeks left to have my magazine, planning, research and evaluation finished, i have split the timetable up into the first three weeks as i am giving myself the final two weeks to redo anything that needs altering and finalize the whole project. At ths moment in time i have nearly completed all planning therefore i am pretty much ready to start creating my magazine! finally!!!

Page Mockups!!

Here is my first mockup of a front cover of my music magazine!! After the audience questionaire determined the name "Breakout" i've had to do some serious thinking on how the image will correspond to the name. As the name resembles new artists who are just breaking into the music industry i thought of the idea of having the model aka Lois, holding a vinyl up over her mouth- this will resemble that she is unheard of but will soon breakout of her silence.
The leading caption also corresponds to the name of the magazine and the image of the artist by saying that this new artist is ready to breakout into the music industry.
For the design/colour palette i have thought of using a bright pink background but altering with the colour to make it less bright, this can be done as my friends bedroom walls are bright pink which makes the planning and shooting much easier. I am undecided on the colour of the title of the magazine, i was thinking black but i want to play around with different fonts and styles first and see which will allow me to change colours etc.
As i have the other idea of using a duo as my main artists i am in the process of creating a second mockup then i will decide which i want to do. I am hoping to have my photoshoot done by Saturday.

Reader Profile!!!

I've created a reader profile which represents a typical reader from my target audience. The age of the reader being 17 fits into my target age group of 16-24, the reader also has a part time job in a live music bar which shows that she is interested in up and coming bands etc. Her typical hobbies include music and playing the guitar- this fits my idea of having an artist whom plays the guitar as the main feature artist as this will interest readers with similar interests. The music interests are also indie-pop/indie bands which shows that this typical reader is the type of audience that i will want to aim for.

Mood Board!!!

This is my moodboard which i created to show ideas of what images and styles i would like in my magazine. I have gathered images of music artists, things which represent the indie-pop style and texts that have been used in other magazines. From looking at this moodboard i have notices that all the texts which have been taken out of magazines aimed at females are all in either pink, red or black which shows straight away who the target audience is. Also the wardrobe that the artists are wearing are quite similar, a few hats have been used on some of the artists and a dark and pastel colour palette has been used. I will try and portray these looks on my models to help with ideas on costumes.

Planning: Costumes...

As my friend Lois already has an indie style to her clothing, not much will need to be changed, as her hair is red either a much darker colour top or dress should be worn which will make the photo look more edgy or a bright top which clashes making all the bright colours stand out. I think a dress would look better as the target audience is females which will indicate that the magazine is for females. For my other model/friend Sam (if the duo idea goes ahead) i would like him in skinny jeans a plain tank with a straw hat, this will give him a laid back "indie" look which will appeal to the female audience.

Location...

I am going to use two main locations for the final shoot of the "unknown band", First is the Memorial Park in my home town of Great Harwood, unfortunatly just as me and Lois went out to snap away it started to snow which made my camera all wet therefore i was unable to take as many shots of the location as i wanted, however i will return when the snow has gone ( Last time it snowed bad i fell on my face and bust my lip and nose! ) and take many more photos to give ideas of shoots and props etc that i have thought of.

As you can see the park is quiet and spacious therefore i will be able to succeed in doing a photoshoot here. The large amount of space allows me to move around to different locations within the park and shoot different scenes. The quietness could also resemble that the unknow band is quiet and unseen in the music industry as to yet.

A shot could be take of the duo walking down this park to the exit showing that they are leaving the "real world" behind and entering the " music world".

The second location i might use is over the tops of Great Harwood, there is a long road which leads down near the centre which over looks surrounding towns. An idea which i had for the smaller images in the feature article was to have the artist walking down the road looking over the towns indicating that they are going to conquer the world and they are on the long journey to making it into the music industry.

Just at the top of the road are these benches, another idea was to have the artist sat on the bench overlooking the surrouding areas similar to the above idea but this will show that the artist is still unknown to the world as they can come to these public areas without being noticed.

Feedback 9.2.10

Heather, this is escellent research! Very good analysis of your questionnaires. I am pleased to see that you are moving on to planning. I see you have taken some photos and have manipulated them. Say what you have done to them exactly - what tools have you used, why? What meaning does it add to the images? This information will be useful to you when you do your evaluation at the end as you will need to discuss your use of technology and what you feel you have learnt from this process.

Keep up the hard work. Try to get all your actual photos taken over half term and a rough draft of your feature article written to hand in to me on the first lesson back on the 22nd Feb. You need to allow plenty of lesson time to the consruction of your pages so that you can re-draft them and perfect them before the deadline.

Planning: Props!!!

Finally the part of the planning which i am excited about! At the moment i am undecided whether to use just one model as a solo artist on the front cover or to have my initial idea of having two models and a duo therefore different props will have to be used for each scenario.
For my initial idea props that i have thought of using are:
  • guitar
  • straw hat
  • bench
  • wall
  • tree
For my second idea of using just one model, the props will be :
  • vinyl record
  • flower
  • hammock
For the front cover only one prop will be used, the model will be infront of a clear background which will allow all attention to be focused on them. The other props such as benches, walls, hammocks etc will be used in the feature article.

Planning: Equipment...

To create my magazine i will be using the programmes Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, the initial magazine will be created in InDesgin whilst the pictures text etc will be firstly edited in Photoshop then transfered onto the magazine template in InDesign. I have had previous tutorials on Photoshop back in High School as i used this programme to create new designs of ipods, however i yet need to learn how to re-use Photoshop as my knowledge has gone!!!! I am considering downloading a free trial in order to teach myself new tricks etc on photoshop. An obvious equipment that i will be using is my digital camera, i didn't want to use my phone for example as the camera quality isn't as good which makes it harder for the photos to be edited.

Practice Photos Edited...

I have edited the practice photos that i took using a free software i have at home, i altered the brightness and contrast and the saturation in order for the picture to be bolder and stand out more. I particularly want the hair to stand out as it is red which will draw peoples attention to it. Her hair also gives the image an edgier look showing that the magazine isn't just a pop magazine it is a hybrid of indie and pop.
